Peer review

New scientific manuscripts undergo double anonymous peer review: author and reviewer identities are not disclosed to each other. Authors submit a separate title page and an anonymised manuscript, including file properties. Preprints and recognisable research may limit anonymity.

The editor screens scope, completeness and ethical compliance before referring suitable manuscripts to independent specialists. Reviewers assess originality, methods, reliability of results, support for conclusions and clarity. Reviewers disclose conflicts before accepting an invitation and keep manuscripts and reports confidential.

The editor considers the reports and decides to accept, request revisions or reject. Authors submit a response to comments with revisions; further review may be requested. The editor makes the final decision. Editorial material may be exempt from external review and must be identified by article type. Submission does not guarantee publication or a fixed review time.

Publication ethics

Authorship, conflicts of interest, ethical oversight, complaints and post-publication corrections are covered in the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement.
